I never liked that orange highlight that Pakistani aunties rocked while I was growing up. Little did I know that it was of no fault of their own, but due to our Asian color. That is why I will tell you how to take care of your hair after highlighting.

Fast forward to my turn to highlight my own hair. Read here if you want to know what my hair color is.

I remember when the salon lady removed the bleach, I almost fainted on seeing the orange streaks!

The hair dresser was amazing though. She set out to settle me and told me she is not done and will now tone my hair. What I ended up with was a nice ash colored style, that I loved and have kept my hair such for last 2 years.

Through trial and error, I now know what to do, and can work with this new highlighted hair.

Here are the tips that work for me:

  • Invest in a good quality purple toner.
    • I have found the Blond Brilliance Temporary Color Care Ash Lathering Shampoo available at Sally Beauty Supply to be the best purple toner and it comes as a shampoo. And yes I’ve tried at least 5 different brands.
      • Pro tip: apply the Shampoo/toner on damp hair for about 10 minutes before you rise it out. Yes the bottle says use in shower and rinse out. However, on Asian hair we have higher level of orange β€˜brassiness’. So keeping it on as a mask will do the trick.
  • Don’t undermine the benefit of a Hair Protectant. Out of all the hair-protectant and detangling products, the best is the Revlon UniqONE All in one hair treatment. This will ensure that there isn’t unneeded breakage. Your hair is already fragile after highlighting.
  • Invest in Olaplex products! I absolutely love the No.7 Bonding oil by this brand. This will literally thicken your hair. On most days, I don’t even use any hair tools, as this oil gives me silky hair.
  • Use your fingers more than brushes to straighten and set your hair. Your fingers know when to be gentle and how to detangle your hair.

Let me know if these tips helps. Also are there any tips that you have used and were successful with, for highlighter hair?
